Kianny N. Antigua: Short Fiction, Letter from Editor Angie Cruz

Angie Cruz

In Spring 2014, Nelly Rosario and I received an email from author and comadre, Stephanie Elizondo Griest inviting us to speak at UNC Chapel Hill as part of a series sponsored by the Latino Studies Department. We read from our books, met with emerging Latino scholars and had numerous conversations about the erasure of Latino narratives in contemporary American culture.

From the moment we arrived to UNC Chapel Hill, we along with graduate students and faculty, brainstormed, dreamt and even schemed of ways to create more spaces and opportunities for Latin@ writers. It was there that Nelly introduced us to the work of the Dominican author Kianny Antigua and then said that she had yet to be translated to English.

A few hours later we met Noah Turner Myers who shared his dream to translate stories from Spanish. Months later, I am delighted to share with you Noah’s translations of Kianny’s stories full of clarity and focus and wonderful surprises. Each of Kianny Antigua’s stories is a pearl.

Enjoy!

This issue could not have been possible without Stephanie’s invitation, without John Ribo’s enthusiasm, without Nelly’s championing and introduction of Kianny’s work. We thank Maria DeGuzman who has created a dynamic space for latin@ writers and scholars at UNC.
