Vandal

We ambled onto the river bank
Oblivious of what lay beneath the waters,
Muddy khaki colored waters of the Rio Grande,
What lurked in the shadows
Beyond the mesquite and huisache.
I barely knew you.
You spoke a language I understood
Minimally;
Yet I understood every sentiment
Your heart spoke.

The shots rang sure and quick
Too quick for us and
The river turned blood red.
A bungled robbery? a drug deal gone bad?
A case of mistaken identity?

Now,
I am beyond words
Beyond borders,
In a safe space
Finally.
